Recently, my mother has been fed up with being a stay-at-home mom now that both of her kids are away at college. She has been participating in several focus groups that pay her money just for going in and answering questions. When I talked to her the other day, she had just gotten back from one such focus group that discussed diabetes insulin care. She said that the questions seemed random, and she was not sure how whatever she did was going to help whatever they were trying to accomplish by having a focus group. I told her that as long as she answered the questions honestly, it probably did not matter whether or not she understood why they were asking her those questions. She agreed, and started to tell me about my dog. She said that Sami was hanging in there, but that she was getting old and was noticeably much less mobile than she used to be. My mom said that she had been having trouble getting up and down the stairs, and that she could not get into the car as easily as she used to. She complained about the extra work that the dog was causing her, and I joked that I would remember that sentiment when she was older.
